TLDR: In her role as Communications Coordinator for the nonprofit Michigan Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (MITESOL), Josie managed the organization’s social media and email marketing, helped move the website to a new platform, and built an the framework for holding a conference online when holding large in-person events was not an option.

About the Organization

“Michigan Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages is a state affiliate of the professional association, TESOL International. MITESOL is composed of professionals who are involved in the teaching of students for whom English is a second or additional language (ESL). … [Their] main mission is to provide leadership and support for professionals involved in TESOL across the state. Among the ways [they] accomplish this is holding an annual conference and sharing pertinent information with [their] members via [their] listserv and social media.” (source)

The Work

During the time I served as MITESOL’s Communications Coordinator (2015-2020), I worked on a variety of tasks, including:

  • Strategizing state-wide member communications and social media posts to distribute organizational and field-related information and to promote events hosted by organizations in the TESOL field (see a few examples of marketing emails)

  • Establishing Google Workspace accounts for organizational email addresses, board information management, and online collaboration, including the migration of all files and folders from previous system (31 hours)

  • Serving as the administrator of the organization’s Google Workspace account, including resetting user passwords, transitioning accounts between incoming/outgoing board members, and providing reports on system usage

  • Writing reference documents for current and future board members to get the most out of Google Workspace and website hosting system, SilkStart

  • Serving as central point of contact for inquiries sent to info@mitesol.org

  • Contributing to the design of the new website and the transition from old to new all-in-one nonprofit management software system (85 hours)

  • Constructing the virtual conference portal when the pandemic halted in-person events (see the video walk-through)

  • Creating the 2020 conference program, including all mail merged information

  • Designing images for use across several platforms: conference program, social media, website graphics

  • Creating and led the merchandise subcommittee to launch online store

  • Creating and distributed surveys

  • Volunteering at the annual conference

“Josie does not shy away from difficult tasks and is willing to collaborate to complete the challenge at hand. …Her presence and legacy on the [MITESOL] board will continue through the longevity of the projects she helped accomplish. I know Josie can benefit other organizations with her skill set. Ms. Gruber is a valuable team member with organizational and systemic thinking.”
